The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is an extracurricular opportunity available to students in Year 9 and above at Good Samaritan Catholic College.

At Good Samaritan, the Duke of Edinburgh program supports students in building confidence, initiative, teamwork and a strong sense of community involvement. These experiences reinforce the College values of service and compassion. The Award offers three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold, each requiring increased dedication and responsibility.

Participants complete four key components:

Skills Development

Students explore a new interest or refine a skill such as cooking, driving, photography or even playing a musical instrument.

Physical
Activity

Participation in a chosen physical activity, either individual-based or team-based, such as a sport like netball, football or athletics.

Voluntary
Service

Unpaid service that contributes to the community, such as working with local charities, parish activities or youth organisations.

Adventurous Journey

Completion of training, a practice journey and a self-sufficient qualifying journey, which together include two overnight expeditions.

The Duke of Edinburgh at Good Samaritan Catholic College

At Good Samaritan Catholic College, students undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award receive thoughtful guidance from staff who help them plan their activities, stay motivated and reach their personal goals. While participants complete their chosen tasks independently, they are supported throughout the process by our Duke of Ed Leaders, who encourage progress and provide direction when needed. Our approach ensures that young people feel heard, supported and confident as they work through each level of the Award.

Located in South-West Sydney, our College is surrounded by a vibrant community that offers rich opportunities for skills development, volunteering and physical activity. Students also benefit from access to nearby natural environments, ideal for completing the Adventurous Journey component.

Why Take Part?

By volunteering, students have the opportunity to serve others and put Christ’s call to “be neighbour” into action. By developing a skill or pursuing a passion, they embrace lifelong learning in the spirit of excellence. Physical recreation fosters perseverance and self-discipline, while the commitment and honesty required promotes integrity. Meanwhile, the Adventurous Journey challenges students to step out in courage, explore beyond their comfort zones, and cultivate hope for what they can achieve.

By participating; our students develop resilience, confidence, and a spirit of service that prepares them not just for academic success, but for meaningful citizenship in a complex world. We believe this journey of discovery, challenge and growth complements our educational ethos. The Duke of Ed helps form exceptional Good Samaritan people, who are ready to lead, serve and make a difference in their communities.
